Make October 14 George Floyd Day, a National Holiday
The Issue
George Floyd was a grandfather, a beautiful spirit, a mentor, a person of peace, a gentle giant, and always cheerful, as described by his friends and family. After a run-in with the law around 2007, he decided to turn his life around and become a force for good. He served in ministry outreach in Houston's Third Ward, mentoring at-risk youth before moving to Minneapolis around 2018 as part of a discipleship program. George was determined to see young men turn away from violence and street culture, going so far as to tape a video pleading for young men in the next generation to put down their guns and stop the violence.
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was taken from us in a senseless act of violence by a Minneapolis police officer.
We are calling for his birth date, October 14, to be known as George Floyd Day; a day of remembrance. On this day we will carry out George's mission of peace and love, recognizing that all human life is a sacred gift and remembering that we are to love our neighbors as ourselves.
Let us never forget George Floyd.
