As a former Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine Sailor who served during the Cold War, I am eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. I believe that sailors who served aboard Fast Attack Submarines during the Cold War experienced dangerous risks everyday 24/7 while underway. I personally can attest to several occasions where a Fast Attack Submarine performed dangerous maneuvers in close proximity to a Soviet Hunter/Killer Submarine in order to disrupt the Soviet Submarine’s ability to detect and shadow my Fleet Ballistic Submarine (known as; “Delousing”). I believe those risks as well as other risks which were routine qualify those sailors for membership in the VFW. As the submarine community is a tight-knit group, I feel compelled to seek eligibility for my brethren.
