Hi everyone,
I just had a meeting today with UPS Vice-President of Public Relations Steve Gaut at their headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. He agreed to meet with me because 160,000 of you signed my Change.org petition asking UPS to stop shipping wildlife killed for trophies.
He assured me they know about my petition and take the issue very seriously. We had a productive discussion where I talked about how Cecil has sparked a global movement against trophy hunting.
To paraphrase, his points were that their current shipping policies follow the laws and regulations where UPS operates. He also said it would be cost prohibitive to the company and its shareholders to constantly make corporate changes based on special interest types of groups. He also said transportation of trophies makes up less than 1% of their business.
My response was that consumers have a choice of where to spend money and if companies like UPS (and FedEx) continue to ship these trophies, we can take our business elsewhere such as USPS.
We speak with these petitions, but also with our consumer choices. If you look at what happened with SeaWorld and the film Blackfish, you can see that public opinion about wildlife protection does impact the shareholders and bottom line, too. SeaWorld stock has been hit hard as a result of so much public awareness against keeping orcas in captivity.
I believe they've been served notice that this is just the beginning if they choose to continue to ship slaughtered wildlife. I also said I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the next UPS shareholder meeting to hear him explain why their business may be losing money as consumers go elsewhere for their shipping needs.
I assure you he was listening and the conversation was engaging and respectful.
I hope they will make the right decision, but in the meantime stay tuned for updates and keep sharing this petition.

I will post again in a few days with additional suggestions for action.
Thank you for your support. UPS is a multi-billion dollar company and your time spent supporting my Change.org petition got them to agree to sit down and talk with me about this issue. It's a good step in the right direction.
