United Nation peacekeeping envoy be deployed to Nigeria for a peaceful protest.
The Issue
As informed as I like to feel, I have actually been existing in blissful ignorance. I have always considered being Nigerian a privilege, exclusive lot, until they started crunching the numbers & it happens that we are far behind several African nations in the standard of living index. Still, I love being Nigerian, If only the Nigerian government will let us be it.
Let it be known that the Nigerian State is oppressive, squashing citizens constitutionally given right of assembly and freedom of speech. Let it be known that the Police Apparatus assassinate citizens when they stand up to speak against brutality. We must not forget all the people who are silent as this is happening. All the politicians and public servants by their silence are complicit in this, and now it tells so much that Nigerians has no place in a nation that claims to practice democracy. Three days of protests and the Nigerian police has for those 3 days straight teargassed peaceful protesters in Abuja. Today, they used 2 water cannons too. Then the police chased after us on foot and hit us with sticks and batons.One girl went down and two of them converged on her and kept beating her. People are being shoot at in Abuja, Edo, Anambra, Ogun, Port harcourt, Lagos, Ibadan, and numerous places of protest. If they can Ban the okada riders and send them off the streets to their families without creating job opportunities for them, why are they concerned about not ending the SARS, is the question the Nigerian youths has put them up with.
The Youths can not stimulate sustainable developments because the government is killing us. Our schools are nothing to write home about. The hospitals here are not equipped to save a soul neither is a healthcare policy to provide for our elderly ones. The Nigerian government is looting from us and killing the youths whom are supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow. We are not only protesting over the end of the SARS (Special Anti-robbery Squad) but also for a #Revolutionnow. The government must sit up to protect her citizens and provide workable conditions for the best standard of living here so that the average Nigerian can not see him or her self leaving the country as a huge achievement to find greener pastures, outside the giant of Africa.
Police Reform Demands;
#EndSARS #EndPolice Brutality #Revolutionnow
There is a national outcry against Police brutality. And however, we, the Nigerian people and members of the #EndSars movement, acknowledge that there is a long road ahead of us. Thus we send this message to the Government to declare what our demands are:
1. We Demand for the Immediate Termination and the End of SARS and all it's members from the Nigerian Police force.
2. National Police Reform of every Police Department in Nigeria.
3. An Investigation into the crimes and murders of SARS operatives: For the Crimes and murders that have been committed, two very effective ways this can be approached would be as follows: Financial history audits (using the bank accounts & BVN numbers) of every SARS personnel. The Financial History of the last two to three years every SARS personnel should be investigated and any SARS personnel who cannot account for the source of their income/financial activities happening within their bank accounts should immediately be arrested & charged with Extortion, Assault with a deadly weapon and armed robbery and be given the maximum sentence. Also, the Continuous monitoring of police personnel bank accounts. Identifying & Recognizing the individuals from the various videos currently circulating online
4. Gun control for Police officers: Only a selected group of trained Police officers should granted access to guns. Those guns should only be used when going on specific assignments where suspects have been proven to be armed and dangerous. The vast majority of Nigerians are not armed; therefore, they are not dangerous. The majority of police officers in England aren't armed with guns, and we share similar gun control laws. Thus, 90% of our police force do not need guns.
5. We Demand Civilian Oversight: There is an immediate need for a democratically elected, qualified civilian oversight board for all police departments! The civilian oversight will be responsible for the following areas: Determining How Police should interact (ethics) with Citizens, Determining what kind of Training for Police Officers, hiring/promotion of senior officers, disciplining and termination of officers, investigation into misconduct, and determining the budget. Immediate relatives, Spouses and Current, Former or Future Members of the Police Force or Government or Member of a Political Party would be prohibited from being a part of this board will cause a conflict of interest of the Nigerian Citizens, politically and otherwise.
6. We demand the Creation of an open and accessible online Database of every Police officer. Users should be able to input the badge number of the officer and information concerning that police officer such as photograph, full name, Department...etc should be available. Also, an Option to report that officer should be made available. Users should also be allowed to upload text, photos or video concerning the incident they are reporting. Reports should also be accessible to the public as well. To encourage transparency of the judicial process.
7. Police officers uniforms should have their badge numbers printed boldly on both the back and front of their uniforms, Jackets, Hats..etc So that they can easily be identified.
8. Police officers/Departments with a track record of misconduct, abuse of power, murder...ETC should be fired/closed and rebuilt to reflect and sustain due-process and the democracy Nigeria is supposed to be.
9. Data concerning the activities of police should also be readily available online for the general public.
10.We Demand a new Justice Department: We have never had a Justice Department in this country, that has truly protected and defended the rights of it's people. We must transform the Justice Department into an institution that will fully investigate instances of police atrocities and prosecute police officers for their actions. The Rule of Law is being abused here in Nigeria.
