Letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Proposal of Diplomatic and Economic sanctions against the Democratic Republic of Myanmar in the aftermath of the situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
Honorable General Secretary of the United Nations,
I hope this letter find you in good health, I write this letter to you today with a very heavy heart as you are well aware of the current situation concerning the Rohingya people in Myanmar and the systematic genocide that is being carried out by the government and military of Myanmar. Rohingya people are an ethnic minority living in Myanmar’s Rakhine state bordering Bangladesh. There had been a collaborative effort in marginalizing, restriction on movement and denial of citizenship by the government, nationalist leaders and the Myanmar military.
As explained by Ms. Yanghee Lee the Special Rapporteur in her statement on June 15th 2017 at the 35th Session of the Human rights council at The United Nation Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner “… The situation in Rakhine State remains tense with incidents of alleged rape, torture, kidnapping and a village official being stabbed to death continue to be reported …” . A similar message was reiterated by her in 2016 . The situation has gone from bad to worse and more the United Nations waits the situation will lead to a new genocide with a magnitude compared to that in Darfur (2003), Bosnia (1991) and Cambodia (1975); and the lessons of the past have been forgotten in the present.
Even though we see the media is sufficiently covering the stories emerging from the Rakhine state there seems to be no effect on neither the government nor the military to stop this senseless violence. For how long will this murderous rampage go on? For this reason your Excellency the responsibility of the Rohingya falls on the United Nations to take action, not tomorrow but now.
The only way for the civilian and military leadership of Myanmar to listen is to put forward Diplomatic and Economic sanctions against the Republic of Myanmar, by restricting them economically they will be forced to reconsider there position on the Rohingya issue. Myanmar is an agricultural country and exports include wooden goods, pulses, beans, fish, rice and clothing alongside natural gas and valuable stone. These products are mainly exported to China, Thailand, India and Japan. While is imports items including fabric, petroleum products, plastics, fertiliser, machinery, transport equipment, cement, construction materials, crude oil; food products and edible oil; to China, Thailand, Singapore and Japan. I will be sending out letter to the premiers of the above mentioned countries as well, for them to consider such sanctions against the Republic of Myanmar.
The embargo should start immediately to make a serious point to the government and military of Myanmar. Your Excellency we as citizen of this world can turn towards you a figure of authority to help change already doomed fate of the Rohingya people. If we can make this happen millions of effected people will have hope again.
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should do nothing” Edmund Burke once said. What we do now matters the most for oppressed, history will remember your name.
Citizen of Humanity,
