Release Canadian Citizen Salim Alaradi

This petition had 2,984 supporters

We urge the United Arab Emirates to stop the torture and unconditionally and immediately release Canadian citizen Salim Alaradi, who has been detained for over 260 days.

Salim Alaradi is a father, brother, friend and businessman.  He is from Vancouver, Canada and relocated to the UAE for business. His family resides in Windsor, Canada.

On August 28, 2014 Salim was arrested without charge from a hotel during a family vacation.  His family was never told why he was arrested or where he was taken.  Family members immediately informed Canadian authorities.

The UAE authorities refused to provide information to the family and denied his release initially.  The family did not publicly advocate in hopes of Salim’s immediate release, however, his whereabouts remained unknown for over four months until a call was received and details of his location were provided.

During this period, it became clear that Salim’s arrest was one of several arrests on foreign business man, including 10 residents who held Libyan nationality. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch quickly investigated and issued reports confirming that Salim’s detainment was considered enforced disappearance and arbitrary under international law.

There are no allegations against Salim or others who have been detained, and he has not been charged with a crime despite being held in custody for over 260 days. This has been confirmed by the Canadian authorities.

Despite certain safeguards in the UAE Constitution and laws, Salim’s rights upon arrest have been disregarded. This is common in the cases where the State Security Agency (SSA) is involved.

Salim’s detainment has not been carried out in accordance with the domestic or equivalent international standards, such as the right not to be imprisoned without an arrest warrant, a right to contest the detention before an independent judicial authority, a right to have access to a lawyer and a right not to be held in incommunicado detention.

This petition will be shared with Canadian Members of Parliament.
