The Calais refugee camp is under imminent threat of being demolished, meaning thousands of refugees will loose their tiny makeshift homes. With winter around the corner we need your support to stop this before its too late.
The rapid growth of the camp and the increasingly violent tactics being employed by people smugglers on the roads entering the port have meant that many parties are calling for something to be done. In response, the French Interior Minister has said that the camp will be dismantled in October.
However, in February over half of the camp was demolished and yet six months later the camp is bigger than it has ever been before. This is clearly shows that that demolitions do not act as a deterrent and that refugees will not stop coming to Calais. Destroying their homes will do nothing more than make living conditions so much more inhumane.
Since the February demolitions there has been an increase in people living in the smaller camps along the northern coast and in northern France. These smaller camps have no running water at all, no showers, toilets or medical facilities and are much more difficult for aid organisations to access with basic aid. Destroying the basic infrastructure that is present in Calais is tragic and purposeless.
The fact that we know that more, not fewer, refugees are on their way, means that a longer term solution is required. Demolitions are not the answer. Sign now to stop this tragedy getting worse.
