Unite Against Anti-Critical Race Theory in Florida

The Issue

We stand with the minorities of Florida in our opposition to the Florida "Individual Freedom Act" and its goal to hinder the teaching of critical race theory. We firmly believe that critical race theory plays a vital role in disseminating the historical and ongoing injustices forced onto minority groups within the United States. Our commitment to comprehensive and inclusive education compels us to raise our voices against the potential stifling of this essential framework.

In 2022, Florida Governor, Ron Desantis, passed the Individual Freedom Act. One of the most troubling aspects of the bill is its aim to restrict discussion and critical examination of historical and societal issues related to race and gender.  By limiting the scope of curriculum content, the bill risks hindering open dialogue and meaningful expression of race and gender.

Critical race theory promotes empathy, tolerance, and social change by providing a nuanced knowledge of historical and contemporary disparities. Critical race theory offers students the tools to spot oppressive tendencies in society by explaining the intricate intersections of race, power, and privilege. The importance of teaching critical race theory to students of color and white students is to create spaces that validate their experiences, empower them to find their voices and transform the educational system into one that is equitable and inclusive through group and self-efficacy.

However, the Florida "Individual Freedom Bill" threatens to impede the teaching of critical race theory and limit the exploration of the experiences of marginalized communities. The bill explicitly prohibits teachers from discussing or teaching that the concept of color blindness is racist or was intentionally created by one race to suppress another. In reality, colorblindness is used to perpetuate racism by ignoring the lived experiences of marginalized communities and suppressing discussions about systemic inequalities.  By constraining discussions on systemic racism and its impact on individuals' lives, this bill risks perpetuating an incomplete version of history, which in turn creates a space where minorities do not feel safe to live their truth.

We firmly believe that education must encompass the full spectrum of our shared past, including the uncomfortable truths that are still reflected in our modern society. Critical race theory provides a lens through which students can critically analyze the legacy of racism and its ramifications. It empowers them to challenge discriminatory systems and achieve a more equitable future Our opposition to the Florida "Individual Freedom Bill" is not a rejection of intellectual diversity or differing viewpoints. Instead, it is a defense of the fundamental right to an education that encourages critical thinking and equips future generations, for both minorities and the white population, with the knowledge and tools to build a better society.
