A country-wide tiger census was conducted by the National Tiger Conservation Authority between January and March 2017. The estimates show that tiger numbers have increased noticeably in Assam since the previous census in 2014. Assam has four national parks, all of which have tigers. Of these, Kaziranga National Park has the most tigers at 104. Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, in addition to tigers, hosts over two-thirds of the world’s great one-horned rhinoceroses. Manas National Park comes next with 30 tigers. But Orang National Park with 28 tigers packed into an area just 78 sq km, deserves a special mention for having the highest tiger density in the world.
