Another tiger died on April 26. The tiger was a cub and belonged to a litter of three. The litter of cubs was orphaned after their mother was electrocuted by poachers on January 19 at Sanjay Tiger Reserve. The cubs were rescued by forest officials the same day and moved to Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. The cubs were raised by the same forest officials. They were given milk at the beginning and were later switched to a diet of ground meat.
Their caregivers did everything they could but the lack of their mother’s milk meant that they could not develop immunity against common diseases. They were diagnosed with feline parvovirus earlier this month. Parvovirus is a highly contagious disease that causes massive internal bleeding, decrease in the number of blood cells and severe dehydration. Two of the cubs succumbed to the infection on April 23. The third cub died around 10:00 am yesterday.
The caregivers were heartbroken after his death. The National Tiger Conservation Authority has sent an official to Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve to investigate the actual cause of death. The depressing situation could have been avoided with the place of stricter laws. More forest guards are also needed because they are spread too thin. Most are busy with cases of poaching and human-animal conflict and do not have the time and resources to go out on patrols.
