Don't Cancel Enrollment of 600 TNVA Students

The Union County School Board will hold an emergency meeting Thursday to decide if it will allow 600 more students into the Tennessee Virtual Academy.
The school is being criticized for first year test scores. Any virtual school environment is different than a standard brick and mortar school. Children, especially first year students, need time to acclimate to the new procedures and curriculum. By chastising TNVA for this, the district is putting virtual schooling at a disadvantage.
Our country's educational system is in the midst of a technological revolution. We are making history by utilizing virtual schooling. The fact that there are challenges in the virtual system isn't a surprise. There are challenges in the "regular" school system as well, yet Union County School Board seems more willing to accept those problems because brick and mortar institutions have been around for as long as we can remember.
The people who utilize Virtual Academies are looking for a better way to educate their children. Many children cannot function in classrooms and they disrupt the flow of class, despite parents, teachers, and the student's best efforts. These 600 children will be forced at the last minute to find a new place to go to school resulting in overwhelming fear and desperation for parents who don't know what else to do.
Additionally, many of these children have already been shipped their supplies and curriculum, and notifications about the emergency meeting have been inconsistent leaving parents in the dark.
Officials stated at the time of TNVA's creation that: "the school would be an alternative for students who don't fit into the traditional classroom setting and an option for parents who wanted a smaller learning environment for their children without the costs."
Are these not the same children who have difficulty with change and testing? Yet they are being penalized because they are exactly who they are supposed to be. Our children need an education too.
