Although the war in Vietnam happened more than 40 years ago, it is still, for South Vietnamese refugees, a fresh wound that time cannot heal. After the fall of Sài Gòn and the government of South Vietnam caused by the invasion of the communist state of North Vietnam, hundreds of thousands South Vietnamese flee the country for their lives. Countless lives lost in the ocean and in the hands of pirates. The only things that these South Vietnamese packed with them were a dream of a new life, of freedom and the flag with a yellow background with three red stripes on it. This flag has always been the pride and the symbol of freedom, democracy and equality of South Vietnam.
Upon the widely official acceptance of the South Vietnam flag in the United States of America as well as in other countries where Vietnamese refugees live and work, I would like to submit a request to Unicode for a South Vietnam flag emoji. We risked our lives for freedom, we fought for the existence of our later generation, we overcome obstacles and hardship to build Vietnamese refugee communities all over the world. Our goal is none other than giving back to those who warmly opened their arms to welcome us. We strongly believe that we deserve this recognition. We would deeply appreciate if our request could be fulfilled.
