Hospitality, Regularization and Protection for Haitian Migrants in the Americas

After the earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010, tens of thousands of Haitians were forced to flee their country for a new life. They arrived in several countries throughout South America, specifically Brazil, Chile and Ecuador, seeking hospitality. Others who had been in the United States of America before the catastrophe could not return to Haiti. However, Brazil regularized more than 80,000 Haitians, has been facing a serious political crisis with heavy economic repercussions. As a result, Haitian migrants who have allowed into the country have lost their jobs and been forced to seek opportunities in the United States. They have migrated from the South and along way, have faced natural disasters, criminal networks, and lack of support from authorities, abuses, and human rights violations. On the other hand, racist policies towards Dominicans of Haitian decent and the deportations of Haitians without due process persist. In the United States, Haitian migrants fear deportation; several have gone to Canada in search of refuge status. In Mexico, thousands of migrants remain stranded at the border of the United States, facing threats of deportation and a humanitarian crisis. In Haiti, the humanitarian, socio-economic and political state of the country has not yet recovered; there is still no dignified and safe set of conditions for Haitian migrants to be able to return home to their country. Haitian migration has become a continental challenge that requires a solution involving all the states and governments of the effected regions. Citizens of the continent ask and demand your states and governments to stand in solidarity for the refuge of Haitian migrants! Regularization now for all Haitian migrants! No more deportation! No more indifference! Now they need you, tomorrow it could be you.
