LGBTIQ Refugees who fled homophobic conditions and anti-gay laws are under attack from both homophobic refugees and from the UNHCR Refugee Authorities who called on the police to beat up the refugees who held a silent protest against the violent and harassing conditions in the campgrounds.
UNHCR Authorities must guarantee the safety and protection of LGBTIQ refugees registered under their care. UNHCR must also listen to the horrific conditions and allow protest if these conditions are not met, and not to resort to police tactics and violence to silence the group. All injured refugees, some severely wounded, have to be given immediate proper medical attention by UNHCR Authorities - they were only given bandages for deep gashes and cuts on the head.
Here is the story from my friend, Moses Mbazira, who was attacked today for staging a silent protest at the camp:
HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS, ADVOCATES, HUMANITARIAN ORGANIZATIONS, TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.
MBAZIRA, MOSES TO LGBTIQ REFUGEE, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF REGUGEE FLAG KAKUMA, IS CURRENTLY IN A VERY CRITICAL CONDITION THAT NEEDS URGENT ATTENTION. HE HAS BEEN BEATEN BY THE POLICE IN KENYA INSIDE UNHCR KENYA COMPOUND KAKUMA SUB OFFICE IN PRESENCE OF THE PROTECTION TEAM MEMBERS WHO CALLED THE POLICE TO PUNISH HIM AND HIS FELLOW COMMUNITY MEMBERS FOR HAVING A PEACEFUL MATCH TO PRESENT THEIR PETITION TO THE HEAD OF UNHCR KENYA AFTER BEING DENIED PERMISSION BY THE CAMP AUTHORITIES. HE HAS BEEN NOT GIVEN ANY MEDICAL ASSISTANCE AND DUMPED INSIDE THE COMMUNITY, AND MAINLY ACCUSED OF BEING ADVOCATING FOR THE RIGHTS OF HIS FELLOW VOICELESS COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND EXPOSING THE INHUMAN HOMOPHOBIC ACTS OF SOME OF THE UNHCR PROTECTION OFFICERS.
HIS PHONE AND SOME OTHER BELONGINGS AND THOSE OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS LIKE BACK BAGS HAVE BEEN RETAINED BY THE POLICE OFFICERS.
