The Issue

Hello here

My name is Ronald I'm a proud gay man from kakuma refugee camp I'm here to fight for our rights that have been violated in kakuma refugee camp for so long.please read through what we've gone through and endeavour to sign.

  • We're facing alot of challenges as queer people in this place including homophobia , persecutions and discriminations  and of which most of them bring both mental and physical injuries in our lives. We're requesting unhcr to come up and intervene in our issues and also to provide the relevant help for us we need help in for of evacuation to a safer place free from homophobia, and all things like such. This Will be the definite solution to all our problems
  • overview of what we've gone through
  •  Kakuma refugee camp is located in the north western turkana region of Kenya , it's under UNHCR having over 20000 refugees among which over 500 of them are queer people who fled from their home countries due to persecutions, homophobia, transphobia and discrimination because of their sexual orientations .
  •  Like other people ( refugees), When LGBTIQA people arrive in Kenya , they are registered under UNHCR as asylum seekers and a proof of registration document called a manifest is given to them and refered to the kakuma refugee camp reception center .
  •        One can stay in the reception center for a given period of time and finally released to the community as far as the process of unhcr Kenya is concerned.
  •        But for the group of LGBT people who entered the reception in 2019 and the following years , they were not supposed to be released to the community due to their lives being vulnerable and subjected to high risks of being attacked because of who they are ,Though the reception center management under unhcr decided to release the first group of LGBT asylum seekers to the community on 20th December 2019 and definitely this group was attacked in the community , their property was stolen including houses ,food etc and they were forced to return back to reception though they were not allowed to enter again hence Forced to stay at reception gate..
  •               Although this happened , unhcr continued releasing queer people to the dangerous communities full of Sudanese , somalies , Congolese and people of other nationalities with strict cultures that they always blamed the queer family for being the cause of all calamities that always happened in the society ,hence attacking them.
  •         As all this continued to happen ,A group of over 200 LGBT people decided to go to the unhcr head office in kakuma town my self inclusive in order to seek for protection and help on the 27th of April 2020 due to all that we had gone through but unfortunately we didn't get any help but instead unhcr together with the Kenyan Police under RAS(refugee affairs secretariat)on 30th of may 2020 decided to severely Cain us and to emit tear gas to us without even considering the young ones and the lame who were wounded and this made some people to faint .On the same day , police under commands of unhcr brought the queer people to the same places where they had been facing all challenges including attacks , discrimination and other forms of persecutions and still we continued to be attacked .
  •    A series of attacks continued to happen both on individual and group basis and we continued reporting to the police and unhcr whom always promised to offer security and protection , Though I would like to list some of the attacks that have been made on the queer family in kakuma refugee camp here
  •    On the 19th of June 2020 a group of queer people who were staying together at block 13 was attacked by a group of Sudanese and over 40 queer people we're injured on this day and upto now police hasn't released the report referring to this attack .
  •   Another attack was on 17th of July 2020when the Kenyan natives know as the turkana people attacked a group of queer people and a lady know as Eligarida non queer was injured on the fore Head .
  •   On the 15th of March 2021 , petrol bombs were also released to a group of queer people staying together and and 2 gay men Jordan and chriton were severely injured and later on chriton died. Having been hospitalized for about a month.
  •    Recently On 16th August 2021 , houses of queer people were set to fire and this led to total destruction of all properties and houses ,food , clothes and so many other properties .
  •   Despite the above , we're still facing challenges like lack of medication , food , clothes and other necessities although unhcr is still silent but informed
  • I hereby call upon everyone's concern on these matters concerning gay people in kakuma refugee camp
