Diesel tax to be increased in Budget 2018. Tax on petrol is 58.7 cent per litre, Tax on diesel is 47.9 cent per litre. Tax Increase to equalise them would be 10.8 cents per litre extra on diesel ...... So, finally we are getting a move to fairness for pre-2008 petrol drivers who have been unjustly (and now it is admitted wrongly) burdened with the high annual Motor Tax . 70% of new car purchases are diesel but they are the "soot polluters" not old pre-2008 petrol cars! Annual Motor Tax equalisation with pre-2008 petrol cars will mean substantial annual motor tax increases for diesel car owners also. Green's and Fianna Fail's 2008 Motor Tax law which led to penal tax on those who owned older cars and low tax for those who could afford new cars ..... has led to "Unintended consequences" .... civil service speak for debacle.
