In our High School, black students are facing unfair restrictions and discriminatory comments regarding their natural hair and cultural hairstyles. Teachers have made derogatory remarks about students' hair, labeling braids and afros as "disgusting" or "untidy" These comments not only degrade our cultural expressions but also strip us of the dignity and pride we rightfully possess in our identities.

The school diary emphasizes that "the image of the school is in a way more important than the individual," implying that our personal expression can be sacrificed for the sake of the school's reputation. However, this policy is not only outdated but oppressive, neglecting the diverse cultures and identities of students who contribute to the school's true image.

Hair is a significant element of cultural identity, especially for black students. Our hairstyles are not just looks—they carry historical and cultural meaning. By enforcing these restrictive policies, the school denies us the right to express our rich heritage and individuality. Such rules are a form of cultural erasure, underscored by years of systemic racism that sees non-Eurocentric traits as inferior.

Research shows that schools with inclusive environments that respect diversity and personal expression produce more well-rounded, confident, and engaged students. Furthermore, the CROWN Act and similar legislation across various regions are working to outlaw discrimination based on hair texture and protective styles, recognizing their cultural importance.

We are calling on the school administration to review and change the current hair policies. By doing so, the school will not only enhance its image but also foster an environment of respect, acceptance, and diversity. This change is not only about hair—it's about dignity, respect, and human rights.
