SAVE SHUNDORBON

SAVE SHUNDORBON
The Issue
Bangladesh government has signed a contract with Indian power company to set up a coal power plant only 14 kms away from Shundorbon boundary which is the largest mangrove forest in the world. This power plant will burn 4500000 tons of coal per year to produce 1320 MW power. This coal will be imported from India and abroad and carry through shundorbon via small rivers. The coal, coal fumes, fuel from litgterage ships, heat, hot water, different poisonous gases and sound will impose a serious threat to the animals specially Royal Bengal tiger, spotted deer, hundred of florals and faunas, honey bees, fish and lively hood of miilion fishermen and honey collecters. It is well understood that in the long run the Shundorbon the largest mangrove forest in the world is at risk of extinction if Bangladesh government does not stop this self destructing project. UNESCO should come forward immediately and take necessary steps to ask Bangladesh government to stop this coal power plant near Shundorbon. You can set up thousands of power plant but cannot grow a single shundorbon. Shundorbon is there to help bangladeshi people leaving at coastal belt by protecting them from cyclones. The power plant could be easily set up in any of the island located at southern part of Bangladesh without harming the thousands years old world heritage.
