UNESCO: Award Bagan, Myanmar with the UNESCO World Heritage Center (WHC) Status

The Issue

Bagan is a beautiful ancient city with over 2,200 pagodas, mostly built between the 8th and the 13th Centuries. At one point this city is known to have had over 13,000 pagodas, built by deeply religious ancient kings. Several pagodas were destroyed in wars and earthquakes, but the biggest cause of widespread damage was the 1975 earthquake, which destroyed several preeminent pagodas. The military government then undertook a restoration effort, which experts claim were based on guesswork. While this may or may not be true, the sheer beauty of this site today demands more attention from the international community. With an impending political change, and the country's greater acceptance by the international community since 2012, Myanmar NEEDS the UNESCO's WHC status to be able to attract more tourists and travelers and grow as a major travel hub in Southeast Asia. The locals, poor to say the least, need improved livelihoods with more customers at lacquerware and arts stores. Bagan needs the status ASAP. It is up to the international community and responsible big organizations to help this young country grow. Would we as human beings rather overlook traditional rules for a UNESCO WHC and improve the lives of the local people in the process or do we let petty portions of such rules come in the way of developing beautiful, honest and religious people of a young nation? You decide.
