Open Crown Commons & Flame2Go
The Issue
UNC Charlotte will not be opening Crown Commons and will be continued to be closed throughout the rest of the spring semester when students move back on to campus starting February 19th. This is also true for Flame2Go. Crown Commons was originally opened back at the start of the year before people left for thanksgiving break. It has since then been closed. This has been an understandable decision since the majority of students did not have exceptions to remain on campus and lived elsewhere while attending online classes. They would not be needing to dine on campus. However, the majority of students that originally left are returning to campus starting the 19th. I know many people who are just moving on to campus for the first time this school year as well, so it is possible that there will be even MORE people on campus than there were the previous semester when Crown Commons was still open. Students living in North Village will either have to commute all the way to the other side of campus to dine at SoVi, the dining hall in South Village, or settle for Crown2Go. This commute is simply too long for a lot of people to be able to reliably eat there. Yes, Crown2Go is still an option for those who are not willing to commute, but the quality of food and the options have drastically decreased. UNC Charlotte already charges an absorbent amount of money for meal plans. With the amount meal plan holders pay, they should expect to have a better experience. I personally pay for the meal plan for the convenience it offers. Not having a dining hall on the side of campus I live on does not satisfy that. Flame2Go will also not be reopening which prevents residents in South Village from grabbing to-go meals if needed. I suspect that SoVi will be overcrowded often during peak dining hours due to the entire campus being funneled into that one dining hall if they want to sit down and enjoy their meal. If UNC Charlotte is not able to open Crown Commons, I only find it acceptable that meal plan holders receive a partial refund for receiving decreased quality in their dining experience.
