Campus Police Chief Jeff B. McCracken was derelict in the performance of his duties, issuing   “stand down” orders to campus police during the recent protest during which the Confederate Statue of Silent Sam was destroyed. Video footage has surfaced of UNC campus police officers standing with arms crossed, some carrying on conversations with one another, while this lawlessness played out mere feet away. Campus police have provided barricaded security around Silent Sam at more than one previous protest and ensured that campus property including the monument were secured. That did not take place on Monday.

Police officers swear an oath to defend the citizens and property within their jurisdiction. Such an oath is not something that can be taken lightly, as lives ultimately hang in the balance. Whether  a small neighborhood or university campus, the safety of the tax payers and their property is the mission of law enforcement. Chief Jeff B. McCracken not only failed at this mission on Monday, but willfully chose to neglect the oath he swore.  

Chief Jeff B. McCracken forfeited his integrity and honor as a police officer when he chose dereliction over his oath. Being a public servant, living on a tax payer funded salary, Jeff B. McCracken has dishonored his office and betrayed his oath to serve and protect. For those reasons we the undersigned call for Chief McCracken to immediately resign.
