Unblock Unnecessary Restrictions on HISD Student Access to Websites
The Issue
Every time I try to access a recreational website to utilize my free time effectively while at school, I encounter the same obstacle: the website is blocked by the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Even simple and educational websites such as Cookie Clicker and Little Alchemy, which can be useful tools in enhancing game-based learning experiences, are restricted.
Blocking these websites limits not just the recreational aspects, but also hampers the emerging trend of educational gaming, a practice which has been linked to improved memory, concentration, and analytical skills. Studies from the American Psychological Association (APA) indicate that such games can bolster learning and improve various cognitive skills among students, especially in K-12 educational setups like the HISD (APA, 2013).
We perfectly understand the need for some restrictions to ensure the safety and security of students online. However, a more discriminative approach needs to be taken to ascertain that restrictions are not hindering the liberty and innovation that the internet can offer to students.
We urge the HISD to revisit their website access policies and unblock unnecessary restrictions, providing students not only with an opportunity for recreational activities but also a chance to learn in a fun and engaging manner. Please sign this petition to support a balanced and justified internet access policy for the students of HISD.
