The Issue

It's frustrating to see that the students in the Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD) are unable to access Scratch, a vital educational tool that encourages creativity, logic, and problem-solving. For many of us, Scratch isn't just any tool; it's a gateway to explore our interests in computers and technology, to express our creativity, and to collaborate with others. The inability to use Scratch in our district feels like a huge limitation to our learning and growing potential.

Scratch is a platform developed by the MIT Media Lab, specifically designed to help young learners grasp programming concepts and foster an interest in technology. It is used in schools worldwide to teach students programming through a highly intuitive and user-friendly interface. The benefits of learning Scratch go beyond just coding; it enhances cognitive skills, boosts confidence, and prepares students for future technological challenges.

Blocking Scratch does not benefit our students and only curtails opportunities for us to engage in meaningful learning experiences. In this digital age, students need to be equipped with the skills to navigate and understand this rapidly advancing world. Scratch is an integral part of developing these skills. With the growing emphasis on STEM education, being denied access to Scratch is a disservice to our educational journey.

Instead of blocking valuable resources, our district should seek to promote tools that inspire curiosity and innovation. Lifting this block on Scratch would align SCUSD with the educational standards and practices that are adopted globally and help our students stay competitive. It's important to prepare students for their future roles in society, where technology plays an integral role.

We ask the Sacramento City Unified School District to reconsider their decision and unblock Scratch to enable us to continue developing our skills in a collaborative, engaging, and fun manner. Please support this petition to bring back our access to Scratch and give students the opportunities they need to learn and grow. Sign this petition to help us make a change.
