The Issue

Four weeks ago, our beloved family dog, Punky, disappeared without a trace. It's heart-wrenching to imagine Punky alone and scared somewhere. The distressing series of events that followed points to one man: Jim Sherwin, the current dog catcher for Winchester, Scott County, Illinois. He responded to a call about a stray, claiming it was Punky, a dog deeply cherished by my family and me. Yet, bafflingly, Jim openly admitted to having Punky's belongings, contradicting his statement about Punky being a stray.

Jim's account of the events has shifted multiple times, raising unsettling suspicions about his reliability and professionalism. This isn't an isolated incident; troublingly, Punky is not the first canine to mysteriously vanish under Jim's care. Moreover, he has shown an alarming lack of compassion and respect for animals, evidenced by his inappropriate comments on using cats as bait for catfishing.

The role of a dog catcher demands empathy, integrity, and a genuine concern for the wellbeing of animals and their families—a criteria Jim does not fulfill.

Scott County’s (Winchester, Illinois) animal control needs a devoted individual who will prioritize the safety and care of our pets, ensuring none more go missing due to incompetence or neglect. Too many families, like ours, have suffered the pain of losing a pet and fearing their safety is compromised. We need someone trustworthy—someone who will handle these delicate tasks with sincere dedication.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for change to protect our county’s beloved pets from further distress. Let’s stand together to ensure that we appoint someone who truly cares for the animals entrusted to their care. Please join me in demanding accountability and reform in Scott County's animal control services. Sign the petition today to make a difference in the lives of countless animals and their families.
