The Issue

This year's US primary election cycle has been plagued by an unusual amount of voter problems. USM is trying to open up a global dialogue about the conditions surrounding these issues. Numerous voters across the US and throughout both parties (but more prominent this year within the Democratic Party process) have experienced voter suppression of some kind.

From voter affiliation changes, polling location closures, last minute rule changes, inconsistent or non-responsive voting machines, abhorrently long waiting lines, disorganization and the disappearance of tallied votes it seems that these problems are wide spread. Official investigations have already been launched in Arizona and New York but issues have been reported from nearly every state. USM is requesting that an official UN investigation be launched into the condition of the current voting cycle, including all previous states and extending into all upcoming states. The people deserve to have their voices heard and their votes counted.

On a separate note, a serious discussion must be opened up about the inherent voter suppression that comes from closed primaries. In the near future USM will be launching a campaign into reforming state election rules to allow for a national call into opening every primary. It is estimated that Independents make up nearly 45% of the total electorate, and due to closed primary rules (often with party registration months before the primary) these people's right to vote has been silenced. A transparent and equal election process is the cornerstone of every Democracy, and this cornerstone is now crumbling in the US. Immediate action must be taken before the end of the primary cycle.
