UN must investigate 7-decades-old protracted genocide against Eelam Tamils in Sri Lanka

The Issue

Requesting the UN Member States and the International Community to demand the United Nations to end the seven decades of protracted genocide against the nation of Eelam Tamils

We the people of the occupied Tamil Eelam, the Tamil Diaspora and the people of Tamil Nadu in India jointly request the UN Member States and the International Community to demand the United Nations to end the seven decades of protracted genocide against the nation of Eelam Tamils and all forms of discrimination against the Tamil-speaking people by the Sinhala-dominated unitary State in the island of Ceylon, illegitimately constituted since 1972 as ‘Sri Lanka’. That State has also failed to honor the commitments made to the UN Human Rights Council. As such, There is no scope for any domestic or hybrid process. It is time for international justice mechanisms to step in to end the impunity establishing judicial and political justice.

We demand the United Nations and the International Community to:

1. CONDUCT Independent International Investigations on the systematic and protracted genocide inflicted upon Eelam Tamils since 1956, particularly the genocidal onslaught, which the world failed to prevent in 2009. Any UN referral to the ICC or other international or regional investigation mechanism should specifically refer to investigation on the crime of genocide in addition to the already-established UN findings on war crimes and crimes against humanity.

2. SET UP an Independent International Investigations Mechanism (IIIM) with specific reference to collect evidence of purported genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes as well as the crime against peace.

3. RECOGNISE Eelam Tamils’ inalienable right of Self-Determination in their traditional homeland of territorially merged North-East, do away with the so-called Sixth Amendment, and conduct a UN-monitored referendum allowing them to exercise their distinct sovereignty as per the democratically mandated political aspiration in the last-ever free elections held in 1977.

4. PREVENT the ongoing demographic, cultural, heritage and structural genocide against the nation of Eelam Tamils, ensure non-recurrence of physical genocide, and end all forms of discrimination against the Tamil-speaking Muslims and Up-Country Tamils in the island.
