The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was drafted in 2007 and finally adopted by 147 countries in 2010. The nonbinding declaration prohibits discrimination against indigenous peoples and recognizes their rights to self-determination, as well as preserving their institutions, cultures and traditions.

However, the rights of indigenous peoples around the world are still threatened, encroached upon and violated every day. From land grabs in South Africa to economic injustice in Mexico, indigenous peoples struggle against the onslaught of overwhelming political and corporate forces.
