A real home and family for Morocho and Lulu!
On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, the little dog named Morocho became known to much of Chile, and even in other countries, after he became trapped due to the rising water level of the Mapocho River.
But Morocho was not unknown to everyone. The organization Todos Somos Cholita had known him since he was two months old and had been helping provide him with food and veterinary care while he lived along the riverbank with people experiencing homelessness. They continued helping even after he and his three companions were left alone there. Since then, Todos Somos Cholita continued feeding them, had them spayed or neutered, and put them up for adoption. Between March and September of this year, the organization successfully found homes for Rucio, Tyson, and Yasuri.
It was this organization, together with firefighters, that had been rescuing dogs from the river since early that morning. However, Morocho became frightened and ran away, leading to the situation that we all witnessed.
After Morocho was finally captured, he and his companion Lulú were taken into the care of Santiago’s municipal veterinary clinic, under an agreement that Todos Somos Cholita would find homes for them among the dozens of people who expressed interest after Morocho appeared on television. Suitable families had already been carefully selected.
However, on Thursday the 8th, Santiago Mayor Mario Desbordes announced on television that Morocho would instead become part of the municipality and would spend his days with the district’s security team. On Friday the 9th, the municipality also announced that Lulú would not be returned either and that she, too, would become a community security dog.
We are convinced that having a family will always be better than belonging to an institution where staff and mayors change over time. Living at a municipal facility means that the dogs remain community dogs; it is not an adoption, because an institution is not a family.
We also want to emphasize that neither of the two dogs knows how to navigate streets with cars, since the only environment they have ever known is the river. This puts them at significant risk of being hit by a vehicle in an open urban environment.
They deserve—and have the opportunity—to have something better, a permanent home for the rest of their lives!
Please help us by signing the petition asking that both dogs be returned to the organization Todos Somos Cholita so they can be adopted into families and experience the warmth of a real home.
