As I’ve now closed the petition to Keep KitKat Fairtrade I don’t plan to send you any more updates after this one, but given that it’s World Chocolate Week, I hope you’ll forgive me one final update.

Some people have asked me what’s next – how can we keep up the momentum and fight for a better deal for farmers?
And it’s good question. We didn’t ultimately get what we wanted from Nestle, and there’s no suggestion they’ll change their minds.
So how can we help win a better deal for farmers now? Well, here are a few suggestions from me:

Buy Fairtrade chocolate - there are lots of chocolate brands whose commitment to Fairtrade is part of their DNA and who will always go much, much further than the minimum to stand up for farmers. And buying from small businesses and fair trade shops like the one I run in Yorkshire (All's Fair) helps your local community as well as farmers around the world.

Find your local fair trade shop

Keep campaigning for a fairer chocolate industry – you can sign up to find out more from Fairtrade Foundation here

And if you want to learn more about how we can show solidarity with farmers and producers involved in all aspects of unfair global trade, you can come along to Fairtrade Yorkshire's virtual Conference on Monday 19 October. You’ll connect with representatives from industries like tea, bananas, fashion and homewares and learn how they think we can build a fair trade future.

Personally, I’ve learned a huge amount about the chocolate industry and how unbalanced it is, with so much less power resting with the people who actually do the hard work growing cocoa for us to enjoy. We have a real responsibility to stand with cocoa farmers as they fight for a better future.
Thanks for being a part of this, and hope you enjoy a delicious (and Fairtrade) World Chocolate Week!

Joanna
