Stop the tax payers funding the Madeleine McCann case

The UK Taxpayers money could be better spent on the nation, rather than the search of the three year old who was left by her neglectful parents so they were able to go for lunch, no matter the distance they were from the resort, they still left their 3 year old and 2 year old twin siblings alone, in a foreign country.
"As it emerged the investigation has cost more than £11 million so far since Maddie, three, vanished from Praia da Luz in 2007." Whilst I am not saying all of this money is from taxpayers, it's a certainty that in March 2017 they were asking for a further £85,000. There are documents to suggest that at least £7.3 million is from the UK taxpayers;
The Home Office has provided The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) £1.9m in 2011/12, £2.8m in 2012/13 and £2.6m in 2013/14. (Published 28 Nov 14)
And this only covers 2011-2014. What about from 2007-2011 & 2014-2018!?
The chances are the full £11.1 Million is from us, the taxpayers.
Why are we still funding this when we could be helping the homeless, whom are confirmed as alive (!) whom have been recently making headlines because they're being kicked out of London for the royal wedding? Why are we not homing these unfortunate people or at least giving them hope for the future?
Or the elderly, whom are kept inhumanely when prisoners are kept in better conditions!?
I suppose the point I'm trying to make and the petition I'm trying to raise is:
Why is the government still insisting on searching for Madeleine McCann when it's not even a certainty that she's alive? Even a high ranking police officer has said "Sometimes you just have to put sentiment to one side and say enough is enough" - Former Metropolitan Police senior detective Sue Hill
