I have experienced the horror and shock of having had two breast cancer diagnoses in ten years. Both different types. I have looked on the web and see the UK is the only major European country to offer mammograms every three years and not two. The US also offers two yearly mammograms. Time is crucial and the sooner abnormalities can be picked up the more likely the treatment will be successful. A space of three years means the tumour can escape detection and by the time diagnosed is more likely to be advanced. We need to get this changed as soon as possible to save lives. For mammography to be fit for purpose we need this to be done now. Breast cancer is a common disease for women in the UK and numbers are increasing. On a cost basis early diagnosis will save the NHS money as there is less likely to be need for chemotherapy and follow up treatments.
