At the present time, the longest sentence for animal cruelty in English and Welsh courts is just 5 years, which is totally and absolutely absurd. Think of those animals, the sick and injured animals which are either illegally bread, dumped or mistreated. The lives of abused animals are completely destroyed, and some do not recover from this trauma. How would you feel to have your life crushed, for a reason you could not understand? The people who commit these crimes are cruel, and we must stand up to them by extending their jail sentences, and ensuring that they do not re offend. 

I urge the government to consider my proposal, and raise the maximum sentence for animal cruelty to life in prison depending on the severity of the crime. The least we can do is to ensure the animals get the justice that they deserve. The current maximum sentence is an insult to those animals whose lives have been torn apart. I appreciate that this change would be radical, however we must ensure that animal cruelty is a crime which can lead to serious consequences. I hope that the government will consider my proposals, and like so many governments before them, they will not brush this underneath the carpet.
