To stop the inhumane killing of male chicks and female ducklings.
To stop the inhumane killing of male chicks and female ducklings.
The Issue
Mass-culling of unwanted male chicks is common in industrial farming. During egg production, whether it be free range, organic or battery cage, unwanted male chicks head onto a conveyer belt to be dropped into a shredder and shredded alive or gassed to death. Around 7-billion chicks worldwide are culled each year.
This process is also used to cull female ducklings for the production of foie gras, due to the males gaining more weight and being a more suitable candidate.
As per the RSPCA assured website the method of maceration, which is the name for the shredding process and gassing are classed as "humane" ways of culling chicks.
This is an extremely inhumane way of culling unwanted male chicks. The development of science has now enabled us to determine the sex before hatching, due to this alternative the culling of chicks is an unnecessary practice. France and Germany have prohibited the culling of chicks as of 1st January 2022, bringing out the "Respeggt eggs", the UK need to follow in their footsteps.
Animal welfare has a long way to go before it is perfect, if this helps a small bit, then at least it is the right direction. Living creatures should not be crushed, shredded or gassed when there is no need to do so.
