The Peoples Petition - lockdown the country to protect lives
The Issue
The move to a three tier system is divisive and confusing. Liverpool, Manchester and Nottingham have large student populations. It is not the fault of individuals. There is no explanation for having one rule in the North and another for London. Already there are signs that any infection is moving into other areas. Even SAGE are saying that we need a circuit break.
According to ONS in recent weeks the highest rates of people testing positive for COVID-19 are among older teenagers and young adults. This is not surprising as Students were sent off to Universities and then blamed for getting covid-19. Student courses should have been put online or should be put online. ONS estimates that there have been 3.16 new cases for every 10,000 people per day representing 17,200 new cases a day. 91 cases amongst teachers and students at Oxford University. The argument that young people don’t get it seriously neglects the fact that young people do not live separate to older people. Students will pass on the virus to mothers, fathers, aunties, uncles, grandparents, teachers and others. It is also divisive and prolongs the pain to close businesses in one part of the country and allow others to stay open. There should be a real support package to businesses. Covid-19 cannot be stopped by hoping it is not there. It is not surprising that the Government is opening the Nightingale hospitals. Boris Johnson and the Government are not being truthful about their plans and projections. They are willing to loss lives. They are clutching at straws and hoping that the situation will get better. We are spiralling out of control and push to herd immunity will mean deaths.
National lockdown
Harm to the country will happen and by not having a swift response as they did in New Zealand it will make the economic plight worse. Schools should be closed as already they are finding it difficult to run with absenteeism. Courses can be run online as it has been demonstrated previously. The emotional harm to young people is greatest when they lose a loved one. Death is the worse emotional trauma that anyone faces. Many more young people are going to be traumatised by this.
