Individuals with chronic, debilitating, physically limiting health conditions are being subjected to the unnecessary stress of repeated health assessments by inadequately qualified assessors who are put under pressure to meet business targets of refusing a set number of individuals or lowering their rates even when it is clearly obvious that this should not happen.

My Mother has recently had her PIP assessment and I have been horrified to hear how the assessor acted towards her.  My mum felt as though she was being interrogated for a crime in her own home and that the assessor had already made her mind up she was guilty!  My mum has a condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which has now resulted in further conditions such as Fibromyalgia, arthritis and chronic fatigue to name just a few.  She is in pain constantly and relies on her husband to help her with normal living activities.  She has a diagnosis letter from the world recognised EDS expert, scans and medical reports - all of which the assessor was not interested in looking at.  Her GP and physiotherapist have not been contacted for further information and it is unlikely that they will be.  It would seem it is up to an unqualified, disinterested individual with 'minimal medical knowledge' (as taken from the ATOS job description to become an assessor!!!) to determine if my mother is trying to 'pull a fast one' and claim benefits she shouldn't be!

Surely it is common sense that a medical diagnosis from a qualified consultant, Medical reports and scan images are sufficient evidence to support a disability benefit claim?

I am calling for a government level review of the hideous way in which these PIP assessments are being managed for the sake of the individuals being subjected to the stress of them and for the tax payers who are paying for these assessments, followed by appeals and court cases following a refusal which in the grand scheme of things, probably actually cost more than the benefits they are cutting! (please correct me if I am wrong!)
