Stronger regulation of fireworks to protect animals, the vulnerable and our environment
The Issue
Fireworks have a negative effect on animal wellbeing, mental health, and the environment. A new approach is needed and we need to act now.
Having only organised displays and not being able to buy fireworks for personal use would hopefully limit this. We need to:
- Limit the use of fireworks unless for organised displays
- Introduce a Permit scheme over 21’s for personal use
- Issue these permits on a time-limited basis
Too often, we are hearing about the devastation that fireworks are causing to our pets, wildlife and even humans. I have had a very personal experience with a group of young lads acting irresponsibly with fireworks which could have resulted in a very serious injury or worse. I was one of the lucky ones I got away, but there are so many people buying and using fireworks without considering the consequences.
Dogs, cats and wildlife are dying every year. Ever increasing stories of dogs bolting from the noise, being found cowering and sometimes dying in their owners arms from pure shock or heart attacks. This is increasing year upon year and is devastating for all concerned and needs to be addressed now!
People that suffer from PTSD are also affected. Children with certain conditions and those that are too young to understand what the unbelievably loud bangs are. It’s not right and about time we did something about it.
Fireworks are yet another pollutant for our environment too. A recent study has shown that fireworks release chemicals such as lead, copper, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur. All of which can and do cause respiratory issues. These toxic chemicals are bad for everyone and our environment.
The use of personal fireworks also leads to an increased demand on our emergency services. The fire service, attending out of control bonfires, ambulances service and hospitals having to treat soaring numbers of burn cases amongst other injuries.
Fireworks are also not biodegradable. They end up littering our back gardens, parks, and countryside. Some end up on our beaches and get washed out to sea. Another thing to destroy our precious sea life!
I don’t want to be the fun police but I do want to protect our animals, humans and environment. I don’t have all the answers, but surely implementing a permit system could help regulate and limit the amount of damage they cause.
