STOP THE BREEDING OF UNHEALTHY ANIMALS

STOP THE BREEDING OF UNHEALTHY ANIMALS
The Issue
Stop the breeding of dogs with deformities and unhealthy genetics. Stop them passing through to the puppies and causing them to die young.
My puppy Coco was a french bulldog. We had her from 8 weeks old and we loved her. We gave her everything we could and spoilt her rotten. She always got her own way and she was constantly treated and she sat on our laps most of the time. Coco was born on the 12th of April 2018 and only lived until the 7th of February 2021. Why? Because she was part of a long line of unhealthy dogs. Her mum had to be put down young and there was constant issues with her since the day we got her. She had a cherry eye which is genetic, she had constant skin conditions which actually managed to go away! She always had a red chin (I don’t know whether that’s normal) she only came into season once properly the whole time we had her. We got her checked out by the vets a few times obviously and we always seemed to work past all these problems.
On the 3rd of February 2021, she changed. We put her in her basket while we ate (as we always would) and for some reason we forgot to let her out. Now usually she would cry ( yes cry!) and bark until we let her out because that was the only time she was ever locked in. But this time she didn’t. She was in there for about an hour before we realised and we opened the door and she never came out. We thought she was in a mood with us (she did this after her injections) and tried to lure her out but she wouldn’t so we left her. A couple days go by and she still isn’t right she’s barely leaving her bed and she’s staring at the wall a lot, also she isn’t really eating which wasn’t normal for Coco. We phoned the vet and they said it wasn’t an emergency so we decided maybe she was due in season or she was just in a really big mood. We left her be and we would get her out her bed a few times in the day to sit with us to try cheer her up. The morning of the 7th arrived and she hadn’t left her bed at all all day, and when I went in she was just staring at the wall. I got her out to say bye before I went to work and I realised her back legs wasn’t working (they must of slowly been getting weaker) I shouted for my mum and they took her to the vet.
She had a genetic condition that caused her to be paralysed from the waist down. This was always going to happen and it just happened to her at age 2. She had been fine the week before.
Around 4pm on the 7th my family made the devastating decision to put her out of her pain and suffering. It wasn’t fair to bring her home immobile and unable to hold her bowels. She was paralysed.
I’m writing this with a heavy heart that reckless puppy breeding needs to stop. Maybe we should of done research onto the breeder more or maybe we could of done this or that but, one thing stays clear Coco would of been ill anyway whether we had her or anyone else. I’m grateful for the time I got to spend with my dog and I know she loved us and she knew she was loved. We should of had longer with her!
so I’m asking you today to sign this petition to change the laws on puppy breeding as many don’t see the dogs they breed as pets only as money. This dogs are not looked after properly and health checks should be mandatory before having any puppies.
In Coco’s mums litter she lost pups. There was 6 and only 3 survived; Coco and her brother and her sister. I wish we could get in contact with who bought them to see if they are okay and still healthy. I hope they are.
By stopping reckless puppy farming you’re saving a dog a life cut short by pain and sadness. You’re saving a family’s heartbreak when there pet has to leave far too soon than they could of imagined.
I wouldn’t change my time with Coco in the slighest, she was the best dog I could of ever dreamed for I’m just glad she’s no longer in pain.
Rest in Peace Coco xxxx
