Thousands of dogs are given away for free as well as sold to unscrupulous dog owners who mistreat these dogs or use them as bait dogs. 

Dog-baiting is the setting of game dogs against a chained or confined animal as a bloodsport or to train dogs to fight against other dogs. The dogs bite and tear to subdue the opposing animal by incapacitating or killing it. It is illegal in most countries with varying levels of enforcement however it happens day in, day out across the UK.

People involved in the sport will look on Gumtree, Facebook etc for dogs that need new homes by owners advertising them for free and then take them home to be abused day in, day out until they pass away.

The Dog Diaries propose that the law is changed so that anyone buying, adopting or fostering a dog has to be subjected to a background check which is renewed every 5 years or so. This check will include a quick home visit by a professional, a police national computer check to ensure there are no criminal offences against animals etc and finally references.

We propose that this register should be kept online so people who sell or give away these dogs can check it and finally we propose that it be illegal to not only sell or give away a dog to someone without a valid check but to own one as well.
