Jade Curtis started this petition to UK Parliament and

Dog prices have increased dramatically during the Corona virus pandemic as the demand for puppies has increased with people spending more time at home. As a result, people are breeding dogs in order to make a large sum of money, making thousands of pounds from a litter of puppies. These breeders are motivated by money, and are therefore not concerned about the health or well-being of the puppies or the parent dogs.

This is an easy way for people to make a 'tax-free' 'quick and easy' income. Their concern is therefore not the animals welfare, but on how much money they can make.

There are no regulations in place to protect the dogs. The current Gov.uk guideline states that a dog breeding licence is only needed for five or more litters per year.

Dogs are being in-bred, causing health issues. The parent dogs and puppies are not being treated as a priority.

Similarly, with dogs currently having such a high price tag dog theft is at an all time high.

A further knock on effect is that as there are more dogs being bred and bought, there is also an increase in dogs no longer being wanted as peoples situations change. Animal rescue shelters predict a 27% increase in unwanted dogs in the next five years (Battersea, 2020).

With the change of dog breeding regulations and licences being put in place this will remove the motivation for individuals to breed dogs purely for financial gain. Dog breeders will be intrinsically motivated by their passion and love for the dogs only, and will care about the welfare of the animals. With less dogs being bred and therefore unwanted down the line, this eases pressure on animal rescues centres.

I suggest a fine is put in place for breeders whose motivation is financial gain only. This money can be then used to regulate un-ethical puppy farming and any excess can be given to animal rescue centres to aid them in providing care for unwanted dogs.
