Amelia Womack started this petition to UK Parliament and

We need an end to the continual growth of airports and air traffic.

On the 8th of October 2018, the UN gave us a clear warning that we have just 12 years to tackle the climate emergency. National and local governments are declaring climate emergencies in response to growing public demands to commit to carbon neutrality. Allowing airports to grow will make these commitments impossible to achieve as more capacity will lead to more flights and more carbon emissions.

Aircraft emissions are estimated to cause around 16,000 premature deaths each year worldwide, of which around 4,000 are from emissions during landing and take-off which affect communities next to airports.

Many airports around the country have plans in place for expansion. We are calling on UK government, the devolved national governments, the London Assembly, local councils and elected politicians of all parties to stop this continual growth of airports.

More airport capacity will simply lead to more and more flights. What we need instead is real investment in public transport, an end to sky high train fares and for the greener option to always be the cheapest and easiest option.

We are calling for an immediate block on all airport expansion plans including those to:

- Build new runways
- Remove current restrictions against flight times
- Build and expand roads

Local and national governments must stop relying on growth in the aviation industry to create jobs in their area and instead develop new jobs in green industries.

The aviation industry is lobbying hard and spending big to persuade politicians to back their expansion projects. We need an immediate end to the relentless growth of airports and flights and to investment in rail services that replace flights and support social changes that reduce the need to travel.
