The Issue

Special shopping hours dedicated to nhs staff, supermarket staff, elderly and vulnerable groups are a brilliant thing. It allows people to shop and get supplies they need, which fits in with their working hours (for some) and keeps at risk groups away from the masses. But. Does this work? Customers queuing around the store to pay ahead of the 10am till opening. If trading wasn’t limited the flow of people would be faster. Surely the law can be relaxed whilst we are during this period? This could help with flow of people, so less all in a confined space, as well allowing supermarkets even to do staggered shopping times. They could then close during the day to allow restocking and factor that into their hours. Poor staff today in Tesco were stood around as they wanted to restock but there simply wasn’t room due to people queuing to pay all around the store.
