On 31st December 2019 a terrible fire killed more than 30 animals in the tropical ape enclosure at Krefeld Zoo in Germany. This is just the latest tragedy in a long list of list of devastating incidents caused by the use of Chinese sky lanterns which are interestingly banned in Germany. The perpetrators of the Zoo fire face up to five years in prison for their reckless behaviour.

In April 2019, The New Scientist reported that over 100 large wildfires had taken hold in the UK in the first four months of the year, making it the worst reported year for wild fires on record. We have all been following the ongoing horror of the Australian bush fires which have cost many human lives as well as an estimate of over 500 thousand animals. There is no evidence that these fires were started by Chinese sky lanterns but they illustrate how foolhardy the release of a naked flame into the sky is. The RSPCA are currently campaigning against the release of sky litter and cite numerous reports of cases of harm to animals and marine life caused by both Chinese lanterns and balloons.  On 22nd May 2018 The UK Government rejected a petition to ban the use of Chinese sky lanterns. We ask that the Government revisit this issue as a matter of urgency before further inevitable tragedies ensue.
