Lauren Cooke started this petition to UK Parliament and

With the government declaring a Climate Emergency, it is more important than ever to empower the general public to make environmentally friendly, ethical purchase decisions. At the moment, however, researching the best choice relies on extensive googling... And most people just don't have the time.

As such, I propose that declaring the CO2 impact for a product should be made part of food product standards by both the UK and EU parliaments.

Much like the Front of Pack (FoP) colour-coded nutrition labels, I think companies should be legally obliged to publish their CO2 g/kg figure to allow reasonable product comparison.

Oat milk provider Oatly are leading this charge by providing this figure transparently on packaging, and I would like to see this across the board. As a happy side effect, I believe making companies declare a red, amber or green status would further motivate them to improve their processes and be better for the world.

Full regulations would need to be investigated and standards of CO2 calculation established, but I would envision this taking into account the product itself and it's packaging process. With clear standards, true comparison could be established.

Bring on a better world for all of us!
