DR. STEPHEN HAMILTON, INNOCENT
A well-respected family man and GP is now in prison – an innocent man, serving a sentence of 18 years. A popular GP, he worked for the NHS for over 20 years with no allegations against him, and built up a successful family practice, the Heaton Medical Centre in Bolton, with his colleagues.
The complainant had suffered from a serious mental illness. She experienced hallucinations and delusions and was driven to harm herself and others. She was diagnosed with a schizophrenic psychotic illness. She was frequently hospitalised and treated with a mixture of strong anti-psychotic medications and psychological counselling. She said she was sexually abused. The Crown Prosecution Service interviewed her and considered the matter and decided not to bring charges. However, after several months she was re-interviewed. Despite there being no detailled allegations, six months later Stephen was charged.
The English legal system does not believe a jury can make a mistake.
Appeals can only be based on argument that the process of the court was in error.
Unless fresh evidence becomes available, the 18 year sentence and permanent label of sex offender will stand.
Stephen remains positive, because he is innocent, that when the complainant recovers, she will be able to extricate the confused false memories from the truth, and will be brave enough to come forward.
