We are pleased to inform you that our written evidence on the need for a more compassionate, transparent, and effective political system has been published by the UK Parliament’s Modernisation Committee. This represents an important step in the ongoing discussions about reforming the House of Commons to ensure it better serves both elected representatives and the public.

The committee received over 700 submissions from MPs, parliamentary staff, civil society organisations, and members of the public. Its inquiry focuses on improving parliamentary culture, modernising working practices, and strengthening public trust in the political system. We welcome the inclusion of our proposals in this process and the opportunity it presents for meaningful change.

Our Key Recommendations
Read our Submission

Our submission, based on research and direct testimony from departing MPs, outlined a series of measures designed to enhance the integrity, inclusivity, and functionality of Parliament:

🔹 Strengthening standards and accountability – We called for new legislation to promote honesty in politics, ensuring that those who deliberately mislead the public face appropriate consequences. Recent polling shows that public trust in politicians is at a historic low, making this reform both urgent and necessary.

🔹 Creating a more inclusive and accessible Parliament – We proposed reviewing sitting hours, expanding hybrid working arrangements, and considering job-sharing options for MPs. These measures would help to ensure that Parliament is open to people from all backgrounds, particularly those with caring responsibilities or from underrepresented groups.

🔹 Improving parliamentary culture – We urged reforms to promote respectful and constructive debate, addressing the increasing levels of hostility and aggression in political discourse. A more professional and collaborative environment would contribute to more effective decision-making and public engagement.

🔹 Enhancing parliamentary procedures – We recommended returning to electronic voting, preventing the ‘talking out’ of Private Members’ Bills, and increasing backbench MPs’ influence over parliamentary business. These changes would help to make Parliament more efficient and responsive.

The Importance of Reform
These recommendations align with wider efforts to modernise Parliament and restore public confidence in the political system. At a time when trust in democracy is declining, it is essential that Parliament demonstrates leadership in transparency, accountability, and fairness.

We will continue to advocate for these necessary reforms, but sustained progress will require ongoing public support and engagement. If you are able to, please consider making a donation to help us continue this work.
