Kate C started this petition to UK Parliament

Currently animal welfare charities are not included in the "good causes" receiving financial support from the National Lottery.  In the year ending 31 March 2020 the funds were shared as follows:

Health 40%

Sport, The Arts and Heritage 20%

An estimated 250,000 animals go to rescue centres each year. The financial impact of Covid 19 on the charities supporting such centres is already huge due to fundraising activities being cancelled.  The economic downturn anticipated to follow Covid will see an increase in animals needing to be rescued for the following reasons: families who can no longer afford to keep their pets; animals taken on during lockdown and given up as life returns to normal; and commercial animals such as greyhounds no longer needed as those industries suffer from a worsening economic position.

At the same time financial donations will reduce as people's disposable incomes are impacted by a recession.

I am asking for the categories receiving funding from the National Lottery to be amended to include charitable animal rehoming centres.

Increased funding would enable such centres to

1) keep animals in safe healthy and humane environments,

2) to ensure animals are fed nutritionally sound diets and

3) to enable the charity to undertake home checks to ensure the animals are rehomed to loving homes that can provide the care the animal needs
