UK Parliament: Commit to building 100,000 new council houses every year for 30 years
The Issue
More than 1 million people are on council housing waiting lists in England.
The Right to Buy scheme has seen millions of council houses sold off, without being replaced at the same rate.
We desperately need a new generation of well-designed, genuinely affordable council houses for those in most need.
That’s why I’m calling on the Government to commit to build 100,000 new council homes every year for the next 30 years.
I’m proud to have been raised on a thriving council estate in the 1970s. My neighbourhood was a fantastic place to grow up and everyone was proud of their council-owned homes.
This country’s obsession with home ownership over the last 40 years has created real stigma around rented council housing – and it breaks my heart.
I want this country to remember the true value of council housing and restore it to a place of pride.
In 1919, the Government’s ‘Addison Act’ gave local councils the power to build thousands of new homes across Britain after the First World War.
Since then though, successive Governments have failed to build enough affordable housing, leaving hard-working people and the younger generation unable to afford a home.
To mark the centenary of council housing in this country, I’m calling on Government to commit to building 100,000 new council homes every year for the next 30 years.
Together, we can make a real difference.
