Change the law on vehicles hitting animals, cats should be included
The Issue
Change the law on drivers hitting animals. At present driver's of any vehicle can hit a much loved and treasured family pet cat. And by UK law the driver doesn't have to report the incident. Doesn't even have to stop and check to see if this poor defenceless creature is okay? How does this family find out about the devastating news? Does the cat have the strength to make it home after such a terrible ordeal? Does it have the courage or is it too frightened? Scared, alone and possibly dying. Hiding away from its loved ones who have cared for it since it was old enough to leave its mother. This could be any one of the 230000 cats family's that are killed on our roads each year. That's 630 cats every single day. Imagine how their lives are impacted, imagine the impact on the family's children. 74.6% of RTA's involving cats end in fatalities. 17% are seriously injured. Today, my family joined that horrendous statistic. My family endured the heart breaking agony of losing its small furry baby. Spyro was amazing, the friend when the children just needed a hug. A nuzzle when the wife needed a smile. A playful few minutes to cheer you up. A relaxing purr to help you sleep. Our family will never be the same without Spyro, and sadly like many, many, other families before ours and after ours. We will never get any justice for Spyro being taken away from us so early and so cruelly.
This is why I am starting this petition, asking for as many signatures as possible requesting that the UK PARLIAMENT change the ROAD TRAFFIC ACT 1988 law, currently in place and add cats to this list, they are loved and treasured just as much as dogs and losing a cat is just as devastating. By changing the law and imposing punishments where deserved, (I do understand that its not always the drivers fault) these stats will hopefully be reduced significantly and a huge number of families will be spared the emotional scarring that my family has experienced today.
Thank you
