Boris Johnson must condemn police brutality and ban exports of riot control supplies to US
The Issue
The video of George Floyd being brutally murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis, USA is a clear and unequivocal example of racial injustice and police brutality that world leaders, including Boris Johnson, must condemn.
George was handcuffed and restrained and being completely cooperative when this all went down. The officer put his knee on George’s neck choking him for minutes on minutes while George screamed that he could not breathe. Bystanders beg for the police officer to take his knee off George’s neck, but the officer didn’t listen and continued to choke him.
Only one police officer Derek Chauvin has been arrested and charged with murder. The other three Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng are still free. The UK government must call for the arrest of these men and ensure that the police are not exempt from the law.
Furthermore, in response to protests, police brutality has intensified with some horrific videos being shared online. President Donald Trump has responded by threatening protesters outside the White House with the "most vicious dogs and most ominous weapons I have ever seen" if they breached the fence.
On Friday, Mr Trump tweeted: “Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” Using the words of a known racist police chief, Trump is clearly inciting violence against protestors. The UK must condemn any leader inciting violence against civilians, particularly those with which we have a special relationship, such as the USA.
The foreign secretary Dominic Raab said Mr Floyd's death was "very distressing" but refused to comment on a series of explosive statements from the US president. This is not right. The UK, which frequently comments on human rights abuses around the world MUST demand justice for George Floyd as well as an end to police brutality in America. Please sign this petition to demand the UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson speaks out and contributes to the delivery of justice in the USA.
