Hunters from America, Germany, Holland and China are heading to the countryside north of London to shoot Chinese water deer, an elusive species whose vampire-like tusks make the animal’s head a prize for trophy collections.
The revelation coincides with an attack on trophy hunting by Carrie Symonds, an environmental campaigner who is also Boris Johnson’s girlfriend. She made it the centre of her first public speech at the Birdfair wildlife event on Friday, describing it as “cruel beyond belief”.
